The PortServer TS or Digi One SP Unit Will Not Boot.

Summary:

This procedure may help recover PortServers exhibiting 9-1-1, 5-1-1, or 2-2-5 power LED blink codes.

Try recovering the unit by attaching a Dumb Terminal or a PC Hyperterminal connection to port 1 at 9600/8/1/none. Power on the PortServer TS unit, while the unit is powering on, hold down the reset button on the PortServer TS unit and tap the letter v on the terminal session.

You will be presented with a Diagnostic menu. Select the option to upgrade using tftp and point to the tftpboot server for the appropriate firmware image. If this does not work to recover the unit, please contact Digi Technical Support.

Detailed instructions:

The “OS file” is just the firmware file that you would normally download/use to update the firmware, e.g. through the web interface.

NOTE:  Be sure to use the correct ("EOS") firmware file/type!  If you are unsure which firmware to use, please contact Digi Technical Support and provide the 50xxxxxx part number from the sticker located underneath the Digi device.

The following Windows-based TFTP Server has been tested successfully with this procedure:

  • When you’re in the diag screen, select (type) ‘t’ to get into the ‘TFTP related choices’ menu.  For the TFTP filename, input the (EOS) firmware file name (for example, "82000774_W1.bin" (without quotes) for the Digi One SP).  The IP address field is what you’ll be assigning to the Digi device.  We suggest using an IP on the same subnet as the computer that’s attached via Ethernet.  255.255.255.0 for the subnet mask and an empty gateway should work for those two settings.  Then, for the ‘network TFTP server’ field, input the IP address of the computer running the TFTP Server.  If possible, we recommend having the Digi device connected directly to the computer with a straight-through network cable, and configuring the computer’s respective Ethernet adapter with a static IP address (beforehand).
  • After the TFTP settings are configured, hit option 3 to ‘get file from TFTP server’.  You should see something like ‘TFTP() returned Success: 1404454 bytes’ (if it says ‘TFTP() returned Failure: 0 bytes’ that means there was a file transfer problem).
  • If all goes well so far, press Escape to get out of the TFTP settings and back to the main menu, then press ‘4’ to write the (EOS) firmware to the unit.
  • Finally, hit ‘6’ (run OS).
